What Do I Need to Know About Buying an Allotment?

  • What can I use my allotment for?
    Allotments can be used to grow fruit and vegetables, you could also keep hens (subject to local planning rules). You can erect a small shed or greenhouse/cloche to protect your tools and plants. If you are looking for land which can be used for leisure activities such as camping, you need to look at our selection of amenity land.
  • What are my responsibilities?
    As an allotment owner you need to respect other allotment owners on your site. Your main responsibility is to keep your allotment weeded so that seeds from weeds do not pass onto other allotments. We use best practice on our allotment sites and each site has an association of allotment owners to ensure the smooth running of the site. You will automatically be asked to join the association so that you can be part of the community.
  • Can I sell or rent my allotment?
    Yes you can sell your allotment and we will be happy to offer a resale service for which we charge £50.00 plus Vat. You can of course sell it privately if you prefer.

    You can sublet your allotment at a rent that you choose. Any tenant will have to sign a tenancy agreement which protects both you and other allotment holders. We will supply you with a legal tenancy agreement that you can use and this can be downloaded from our site free of charge.
  • How does buying using Buy By Renting work?
    Buy By Renting is a new method to purchase property and land. You pay a deposit which is immediately used to purchase part of the allotment you are buying. Each month part of your monthly payment is used as rent and part is used to buy more of your allotment. As your ownership increases more of the rent paid is used to increase your ownership. So if you own 30% of the allotment, 30% of the rent you pay will be used to buy more of your allotment. You can see exactly how much of your allotment you own at any time on our website.
